Please apprise all those you know of who are preparing candidates for Matriculation examinations in Latin for 2008 of the following: 1 From 2008 ONLY the Independent Examinations Board will be examining final-year school Latin in South Africa. The National Education Department will be paying the candidates' fees involved for 2008 and 2009, after which it may be re-negotiated. 2 Please consult the IEB website at www.ieb.co.za for the format of the examination (which will be much the same as before, even if "outcomes-based", i.e. First paper: setwork (200), Second paper: unseens (100), Portfolio: Classical Culture and cumulative assessment together (100), total 400) 3 IEB will have available a "mock-Grade 11" for those who wish to use it to get used to the format for the end of this year-consult IEB website for prescribed reading. This exam will take place on a specific day in the week before the National exams. 4 IEB will prescribe reading only for Grade 12; teachers can follow their own syllabi for Grade 11 (unless they utilise the "mock-grade 11" , which is for this year ONLY). 5 Note that there will be only ONE combined portfolio, of 11 items, including two research essays, tests, exercises and exams-consult IEB website for specifications. The only significant innovation is that candidates may be asked to do a brief oral presentation of the material of ONE essay. 6 Note that the "Guidance for Teachers and Learners" on the CASA website (http://www.casa-kvsa.org.za/Latyndoc/latinteach.html) is still appropriate and applicable EXCEPT for suggestions regarding the portfolios-these will be updated over time. For the moment keep exactly to the IEB specifications. 7 Individual queries may be directed to Mrs Frances Kerr-Phillips at kerr-phillips@ieb.com. Sursum corda-there is still life for Latin after 2007! Jo-Marie Claassen |
