SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS
GOLDEN
JUBILEE CONFERENCE
ASPECTS
OF EMPIRE
The 27th
CASA conference will be held at the University of Cape Town from Monday 2nd
to Thursday 5th July 2007 and will celebrate 50 years of the
Classical Association’s activities in southern Africa.
The
theme of the conference is ASPECTS OF EMPIRE
and the keynote speaker is Prof. Simon
Hornblower (University College London). The Istituto Italiano di Cultura is
collaborating with CASA to send as special speaker Prof. Mario Capasso (Lecce
and Naples).
Papers (20 minutes in length) may be on the
theme, or on other classical topics or may have a related interdisciplinary
focus. Proposals for panel discussions and offers to coordinate panels will
be welcome.
As of 31st
December 2006, nearly fifty proposals for papers have been accepted. There
is a contingent of scholars with interests in ancient medicine.
We welcome the offer of papers from professional
classicists and from students working at postgraduate level. Titles and
brief abstracts (not more than 250 words) should be sent to Prof. David Wardle by
e-mail (dward@humanities.uct.ac.za)
by 5th April, 2007. Abstracts may also be sent to Clive Chandler
(clive.chandler@uct.ac.za).

Conference Fee
The conference fee of R 700 for
CASA members, R 800 for others (R400 for the unwaged) will include morning
and afternoon teas, lunches from Tuesday to Thursday, evening meals on
Monday and Tuesday, transportation costs between conference venues.
Please will all delegates not paying in South African Rands add a R100
foreign currency transaction fee to their total. (This does not apply to
credit card transactions).
Accommodation
Accommodation for delegates will be reserved at a residence on the UCT
Campus. We have requested the historic Smuts Residence on Upper Campus.
If more
than 50 delegates stay in residence, UCT offers the ‘conference service’
which includes hot breakfast, daily room cleaning (R 190 per night).
Transport
Delegates arriving at Cape Town International Airport on Monday 2
July or leaving on Thursday 5 July will be transported by shuttle to and
from UCT. It may be possible to meet delegates arriving or leaving at on
other dates. Please advise Clive Chandler of your ETA.
Conference
Dinner
To mark the special anniversary
of CASA we are offering a three-course meal (with some drinks included) at a
fashionable Cape Town restaurant on Wednesday evening. Transport to and from
the restaurant is included. Price: R 200
Free
Time/Excursion
Wednesday afternoon will be free time for delegates; we will provide
transport to and from the Waterfront or town centre, returning in time for
the conference dinner.

Cheques should be made out to
'The
University of Cape Town', code 420628. If your cheque is not
made out in South African Rands please add a R100 currency
transaction fee to the total. This additional charge applies to
foreign currency cheques only.
If you
are paying by bank transfer/deposit please attach a copy of the
transfer/deposit slip of your transaction to your registration form.
Please add a R100 currency transaction fee if you
are making a transfer from a country that does not use Rands. Account details are provided
on the registration form. Please note electronic bank transfers are
not possible.
If you
are paying by credit card please print out the
credit card
form (PDF format) (download
Word version here), and attach it to your registration
form. There is no foreign currency transaction
fee for credit card payments.
