LEAVE REPLACEMENT POST IN CLASSICS (RHODES UNIVERSITY)
2010 2nd semester: leave replacement
A position of teaching assistant is available from July 1 to December 31 2010,
as one of the staff members (John Jackson) has been granted study leave for this
period. The remuneration (gross) is
R38 500. The successful applicant
will be expected to teach some Greek and/or Latin up to 3rd year
level and components of Classical Civilisation.
In the latter subject the choice of what is presented by the teaching
assistant could be linked with his/her areas of expertise, but specialised
knowledge of Greek and Roman history would certainly be an advantage.
Classical Studies is one of the 6 sections of the School of Languages.
It offers undergraduate courses in Classical Civilisation (2-year major)
and Greek and Latin (both 3-year majors), and Honours and Masters degrees in all
these subjects. There are three fulltime members of staff, as well as a number
of students (mainly postgraduate) who assist with tutorials and marking.
This year there will be takers for most of the courses that we offer.
This is less daunting than it sounds, since most of our teaching of
post-1st year language courses is done concurrently (e.g. Latin 2 and
3 are taught together for much of their study of prepared texts) , and some
components at Honours level are examined by long essays rather than formally
taught papers.
We are hoping that the position of teaching assistant will be of interest to
someone who has recently completed an Honours degree, is working towards or
thinking seriously of beginning a Masters degree and would like ultimately to
pursue a career in Classics.
Anyone who is interested in this position should send a CV and contact details
to:
John Jackson (email j.jackson@ru.ac.za;
phone 046 603 8273 – work)
by 31 January 2010.
