3.6        Awards and bursaries / Toekennings en beurse

Corrie Schumann received a Laureate award for her contribution to teaching innovation at the University of Pretoria in recognition of her dedication over many years to promote Latin as a subject on primary secondary and tertiary level. / Corrie Schumann het 'n Laureaat-toekenning ontvang vir die besondere bydrae wat sy gelewer het tot onderriginnovasie aan die Universiteit van Pretoria as 'n erkenning vir haar jarelange toewyding en harde werk om Latyn as vak op primêre, sekondêre en tersiêre vlak te bevorder.

Dennis Saddington (Wits) has been selected on the Committee of Honour of the Roman Frontier Congresses (the only person not from Europe). He will be attending the Congress on Hadrian's Wall in August and will give a paper. / Dennis Saddington (Wits) is verkies op die “Committee of Honour of the Roman Frontier Congresses” (die enigste persoon nie uit Europa nie). Hy sal die Kongres oor Hadrianus se muur in Augustus bywoon en ‘n referaat lewer.

Johann Cook (US) has been awarded a grant from the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust for a research project on the Septuagint that will be conducted at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands during the second semester of 2009. / Johann Cook (US) het ‘n toekenning van die Oppenheimer Gedenktrust ontvang vir ‘n navorsingsprojek oor die Septuagint wat gedurende die tweede semester van 2009 aan die Universiteit van Leiden in Nederland onderneem sal word.

Johann Cook also received the Rector’s Award for Excellence in Research in 2008. / Die Rektor se Toekenning vir Voortreflike Navorsing is ook in 2008 aan Johann Cook gemaak.

Sjarlene Thom (2007) and Annemaré Kotzé (2008) received the Rector’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (US). / Sjarlene Thom (2007) en Annemaré Kotzé (2008) het die Rektorstoekennning vir Voortreflike Onderrig ontvang (US).

Philip Bosman (UNISA) received the Chancellor’s Prize for Research in 2008. / Philip Bosman (UNISA) het die Kanselliersprys vir Navorsing in 2008 ontvang.

Jeffrey Murray (UKZN Durban) received the Ursula Vogel Award for 2007 and Samantha Masters (US) for 2009. / Jeffrey Murray (UKZN Durban) het die Ursula Vogel-toekenning vir 2007 ontvang en Samantha Masters (US) vir 2009.

4.         Adoption of the Minutes / Goedkeuring van die Notule

The minutes of the previous Business Meeting of CASA, held in Cape Town, 5 July 2007, are approved (proposed: J.M. Claassen; seconded: L. Cilliers). / Die notule van die vorige Algemene Vergadering van die KVSA, gehou in Kaapstad, 5 Julie 2007, word goedgekeur (voorsteller: J.M. Claassen; sekondant: L. Cilliers).

5.         Matters arising / Sake voortspruitend

5.1        The meeting decides to continue the affiliation of CASA with FIEC. / Die vergadering besluit dat die KVSA sy affiliasie met FIEC sal voortsit.

5.2        Registration of CASA as an NPO has succeeded. The meeting expresses its thanks to John Hilton for the decisive role he played in bringing this about. / Die KVSA is as ‘n NWO geregistreer. Die vergadering bedank John Hilton vir die deurslaggewende rol wat hy gespeel het om dit te bewerkstellig.

5.3        Revision of Constitution / Hersiening van Konstitusie

The chairman, Christoff Zietsman, discusses the editorial changes made to the constitution. The changes are approved (proposed: J.M. Claassen; seconded: K. Kritzinger). / Die voorsitter, Christoff Zietsman, bespreek die redaksionele wysigings aan die konstitusie. Die wysigings word goedgekeur (voorsteller: J.M. Claassen; sekondant: K. Kritzinger).

5.4        For the immediate future Acta Classica will not function independently from CASA. / Vir die onmiddellike toekoms sal Acta Classica nie onafhanklik van die KVSA funksioneer nie.

5.5        Both Acta Classica and Akroterion are on Sabinet and/or other journal websites. The incoming Executive Committee will be asked to ensure that all back copies are also placed on these sites. / Acta Classica en Akroterion is beide op Sabinet en/of ander tydskrif-webtuistes. Die nuwe Bestuur sal versoek word om te verseker dat alle vorige uitgawes ook op hierdie webtuistes geplaas word.

6.         Chairperson’s report / Voorsittersverslag

The chairperson delivers his report. The text will be made available on the CASA website after the conference (see par. 14 for the website address). The report is approved (proposed: J. Hilton; seconded: L. Cilliers). / Die voorsitter lewer sy verslag. Die teks daarvan sal beskikbaar gemaak word op die KVSA se webtuiste na afloop van die kongres (sien par. 14 vir die webadres). 7.         Treasurer’s report / Tesouriersverslag

The treasurer reports that the shortfall indicated in his report has already been made up after membership fees that are in arrears have been paid during the conference. While membership fees of FIEC have increased, funds budgeted for regional meetings have not been paid out, since these expenses were met by individual universities. The need for increased membership is stressed. The incoming treasurer is requested to investigate the facilitation of payments from abroad. The report is approved (proposed: L. Cilliers; seconded: A. Kotzé). / Die tesourier rapporteer dat die tekort wat in sy verslag aangedui word, reeds verreken is nadat agterstallige ledegeld tydens die kongres inbetaal is. Alhoewel fooie vir lidmaatskap van FIEC toegeneem het, is fondse wat begroot is vir streeksvergaderings nie bestee nie, aangesien hierdie onkostes deur individuele universiteite gedek is. Die nuwe tesourier word versoek om die vergemakliking van betalings van oorsee te ondersoek. Die verslag word goedgekeur (voorsteller: L. Cilliers; sekondant: A. Kotzé).

8.         Reports from regional branches / Verslae van streekstakke

The reports from all regions (except for UKZN Pietermaritzburg, who reported orally) were made available before the meeting. All reports are approved and the responsible persons thanked. / Die verslae van al die streekstakke (behalwe vir UKZN Pietermaritzburg wat mondeling rapporteer, is voor die vergadering beskikbaar gestel. 9.         Acta Classica

Both the editor’s report and the financial report were made available before the Business Meeting. The editor, Louise Cilliers, presents the report. The meeting approves the altered emblem (with the wreath below the coin). The report is approved (proposed: M. Dircksen; seconded: C. Zietsman). Both John Hilton and the chair person, Christoff Zietsman, thank the outgoing editor, Louise Cilliers, on behalf of CASA for her hard work and dedication as editor and for the standard of excellence which she has set for the journal. The financial report is presented by Philip Bosman. He informs the meeting that back copies will be sold at R20 per copy. The financial report is approved (proposed: A. Schoeman; seconded: L. Cilliers). / Sowel die redakteur se verslag as die finansiële verslag is voor die Algemene Vergadering beskikbaar gestel. Die redakteur, Louise Cilliers, lê die verslag voor. Die vergadering keur die veranderde embleem (met die krans onder die munt) goed. Die verslag word goedgekeur (voorsteller: M. Dircksen; sekondant: C. Zietsman). Beide John Hilton en die voorsitter, Christoff Zietsman, bedank die uittredende redakteur, Louise Cilliers, namens die KVSA vir haar harde werk en toewyding as redakteur en vir die standaard van uitnemendheid wat sy gestel het vir die tydskrif. 10.        Akroterion

The report on Akroterion has been circulated, and is approved. The editor, Christoff Zietsman, reports that its inclusion on SABINET has had a positive effect on the journal’s finances. He thanks Johan Cilliers, Marianne Dircksen and Peter Tennant, who acted as adjudicators for the Essay Competition, and everyone who reviewed articles. The report is approved (proposed: J. Hilton; seconded: N. Brand). Louise Cilliers thanks Christoff for the many years of hard work and dedication as editor of Akroterion. / Die verslag van Akroterion is reeds versprei en word aanvaar. Die redakteur, Christoff Zietsman, rapporteer dat die insluiting op SABINET ‘n positiewe effek op die finansies van die tydskrif gehad het. Hy bedank Johan Cilliers, Marianne Dircksen en Peter Tennant, wat as beoordelaars vir die Opstelkompetisie opgetree het en ook almal wat artikels gekeur het. Die verslag word goedgekeur (voorsteller: J. Hilton; sekondant: N.Brand). Louise Cilliers bedank Christoff vir die baie jare van harde werk en toewyding as redakteur van Akroterion.

11.        Taskforce on Latin tuition / Werkgroep oor Latyn-onderrig

The report was made available beforehand. Christoff Zietsman thanks Jo-Marie Claassen for her efforts in this regard and requests the incoming Executive Committee to help find a new moderator for Matriculation Latin by the end of 2011 when her term comes to an end. / Die verslag is vooraf beskikbaar gestel. Christoff Zietsman bedank Jo-Marie Claassen vir die werk wat sy in hierdie verband gedoen het en versoek die nuwe Bestuur om te help soek na ‘n nuwe moderator vir Matrikulasie Latyn teen die einde van 2011 wanneer haar termyn verstryk.

12.        Schola Scripta and database / Schola Scripta en databasis

12.1      Corrie Schumann-Bosman thanks CASA for the grant of R4000 over a period of two years, Lesley Levy for a donation of R 1000 for the best Schola Scripta student, and the sponsor, PPS, for their continued financial support. / Corrie Schumann-Bosman bedank die KVSA vir die toekenning van R4000 oor ‘n periode van twee jaar, Lesley Levy vir ‘n donasie van R1000 vir die beste Schola Scripta-student, en die borg, PPS, vir hul voortgesette finansiële ondersteuning.

12.2      Lesley Levy offers to liaise an effort to compile a central list of all classical courses presented in South Africa. The object of such a compilation is to bring these courses to the attention of as many students as possible and to make courses in Classics accessible for students and interested parties in other disciplines. The list will be made available on the CASA website. / Lesley Levy bied aan om as koördineerder op te tree in ‘n poging om ‘n lys saam te stel van alle klassieke kursusse wat in Suid-Afrika aangebied word. Die doel van so ‘n lys is om hierdie kursusse onder die aandag van soveel as moontlik studente te bring en om kursusse in die Klassieke toeganklik te maak vir studente en belangstellendes in ander dissiplines. Die lys sal op die KVSA-webtuiste beskikbaar gestel word.

13.        Research committee / Navorsingskomitee

13.1      Christoff Zietsman requests the incoming representative of the sub-committee to revise the list of library holdings of journals at the various universities in South Africa compiled by Louise Cilliers a number of years ago. The list will be put on the CASA website for departments to consult when asked to revise and save on journal subscriptions for their respective university libraries. In this way library holdings could be consolidated in order to put the ever decreasing funds made available for Classical Journals to best use and hopefully increase the number of journal titles available in the country. / Christoff Zietsman versoek die nuwe verteenwoordiger van die subkomitee om die lys wat Louise Cilliers ‘n paar jaar gelede opgestel het van tydskrifte wat by die onderskeie universiteitsbiblioteke in Suid-Afrika beskikbaar is, te hersien. Die lys sal geplaas word op die KVSA-webtuiste vir gebruik deur departemente wanneer hulle versoek word om die tydskriflyste van hulle onderskeie biblioteke te hersien en daarop te probeer bespaar. Op hierdie manier kan tydskrifversamelings by die onderskeie universiteite in Suid-Afrika gekonsolideer word om die steeds kleiner-wordende fondse wat beskikbaar is vir Klassieke Tydskrifte ten beste te benut en moontlik die aantal beskikbare tydskriftitels in die land te vermeerder.

13.2      The representative is also requested to compile and regularly update for the CASA website a list of upcoming Classics-related international conferences which might be of interest to South African scholars and students. / Die verteenwoordiger word ook versoek om ‘n lys op te stel en gereeld op te dateer vir die KVSA-webtuiste van toekomstige internasionale kongresse wat van belang mag wees vir plaaslike navorsers en studente in die Klassieke.

14.          Fund-raising and publicity committee / Fondsinsamelings- en publisiteits-komitee

Through the efforts of John Hilton the CASA website has been established. He asks members to supply information for the web site. It is decided that contact addresses of all African classicists should appear on the website. The address is: http://www.casa-kvsa.org.za. / Die KVSA webwerf is deur John Hilton op die been gebring. Hy versoek lede om inligting vir die webwerf te voorsien. Daar word besluit dat die kontakadresse van alle klassici in Afrika op die webtuiste aangebring sal word. 15.        Ursula Vogel Memorial Bursary / Ursula Vogel-Gedenkbeurs

The award will again be made in 2011. A request for applications will be sent out in 2010. / Die toekenning sal weer in 2011 gemaak word. ’n Kennisgewing om aansoeke sal in 2010 gesirkuleer word.

16.        Awards for excellence in education and research / Toekennings vir     voortreflikheid in onderrig en navorsing

No nominations have been received. The incoming Executive Committee is requested to ask for nominations with the First Call for Papers for the 2011 Conference. / Geen nominasies is ontvang nie. Die nuwe Bestuur word versoek om vir nominasies te vra wanneer besonderhede vir die 2011-kongres bekend gemaak word.

17.        CASA Essay competition / KVSA Opstelkompetisie

New adjudicators for the competition are appointed in the persons of Martine de Marre (UNISA; convenor), Annemaré Kotzé (US) and Cullen Mackenzie (UKZN Pietermaritzburg). / Nuwe beoordelaars vir die kompetisie word aangewys in die persone van Martine de Marre (UNISA; konvenor), Annemaré Kotzé (US) en Cullen Mackenzie (UKZN Pietermaritzburg).

18.        Election of Office-bearers / Verkiesing van Ampsdraers

Based on a motivation and proposal made by Louise Cilliers (seconded by Corrie Schumann) the meeting unanimously elects Francois Pieter Retief as Honorary Vice President of CASA. / Na aanleiding van ‘n motivering en voorstel deur Louise Cilliers (gesekondeer deur Corrie Schumann) verkies die vergadering eenparig vir Francois Pieter Retief tot Ere-Visepresident van die KVSA.
