PART THREE: LATIN LINGUISTIC CONTENTS PRESUPPOSED FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT OF OUTCOME FOUR: LANGUAGE

Note: what follows briefly spells out the Latin language content ('grammar'), the mastery of which is presupposed for learners to achieve Outcome 4 (language), as spelled out in the Outcomes and Assessment Standards in the LANGUAGE SUBJECT STATEMENT AND LEARNING PROGRAMME FOR LATIN, and should be read in conjunction with that part of the document. This is not a complete 'learning programme' but merely offers a brief indication of the ground to be covered.

Learning programmes spell out the contents to be studied appropriate to each level, type of assessment (process assessment, 'testing and examination', essay writing, other) and indicate the relative weight to be attached to each aspect during assessment ('suggested marks distribution').

TIME SPAN: Traditionally Latin studies in South Africa have been spread over a five-year cycle (or even a six-year cycle), but provision is made below for both a five-year cycle as well as accommodating the division of linguistic contents for the three-year cycle presupposed by the New National Curriculum Statement. These cycles will work as follows:

A. Five-Year cycle

Elementary Latin (two, or optionally, three years)

  • Primary level: Grade 7 (optional introductory course, which may form part of other language studies or of general cultural studies):
  • Secondary level: Grades 8 and 9 (first and second years of basic course, last two years of General Education and Training Band)

Intermediate Latin (one year)

  • Grade 10 (First year of Further Education and Training Band, presupposing two years' previous study of Latin)

Advanced Latin: (two years)

  • Grade 11 (following on three previous years of Latin study)
  • Grade 12 (following on four previous years of Latin study)

B. Three year cycle

  • Elementary Latin (Grade 10)
  • Intermediate Latin (first semester, Grade 11)
  • Advanced Latin (second semester, Grade 11 PLUS Grade 12)

Elementary Latin  Intermediate Latin  Advanced Latin
