CASA Conference 2009

 

The 28th biennial conference will be held at the University of Pretoria from late afternoon Monday, 29th June to lunchtime Thursday 2nd July 2009.

 

Theme

 

The general theme of the conference is Boundaries and Crossings, but offers of papers on any theme related to the Graeco-Roman world and the Classical Tradition will also be acceptable.  We welcome the offer of papers from specialists in Classics and cognate interdisciplinary fields, and postgraduate students (MA and PhD).

Prof Rolf Schneider (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich): ‘Breaking Boundaries: Troy and Egypt in Imperial Rome’ 
Dr Aileen La Tourette (Liverpool John Moores University): ‘Penelope and Helen:  Archetypal Voices in Margaret Atwood (But do they have anything new to say?)’

Prof Hennie Stander (University of Pretoria): ‘Crossing property boundaries: robbery and theft in Chrysostom’s time’.

Conference fee

 

The conference fee of R 1000 for CASA members, R 1200 for non-members, R600 for students and pensioners, will include morning and afternoon teas, lunches from Tuesday to Thursday and evening meals on Monday and Tuesday. 

 

Conference dinner

 

On Wednesday evening there will be a conference dinner offering a three-course meal (with some drinks included) at a Pretoria restaurant. Transport to and from the restaurant is included. Price: R 250

 

Accommodation

 

Accommodation for delegates will be reserved at a residence on the UP campus.  The accommodation includes breakfast and costs R 210 per night. Please let me know if you would like to make use of University accommodation.

 

Pretoria offers a variety of accommodation. Delegates are welcome to search the internet for alternative possibilities.

 

The Brooklyn Guest Houses

 

(http://www.brooklynguesthouses.co.za/) are situated in a safe and attractive neighbourhood close to the University of Pretoria, and the Brooklyn and Hatfield shopping centres. Single rates are currently ZAR 540-00 p.p.p.d. including breakfast.
